About this Event
Just as her star is rising in the New York art world, art photographer Sabre Cumberbatch ditches the scene to return to Barbados, her childhood island home. She's aching to do something with meaning, something important for the world. After witnessing her aunt, a high-society real estate lawyer, unleash a brutal scolding on two party servers, Sabre gets on the local radio station and puts out a call to all the maids and gardeners to refuse the abuse and inequity of daily life in this orderly island "paradise." The response is immediate and beyond all expectations...
So sets the stage for LET ME LIBERATE YOU, a very funny and sharply observed satire by debut novelist Andie Davis.
On July 10 at the release party for her novel at Revolution Books, Andie will be joined in conversation by another Bajan novelist, Naomi Jackson, author of the acclaimed The Star Side of BIrd Hill.
“With Let Me Liberate You, Andie Davis has pulled off a dazzling feat of storytelling, featuring Sabre, an accidental artistic genius-turned-inadvertent Bajan activist searching for purpose in an IG-obsessed world. Told hilariously through multiple perspectives, Sabre’s misadventures had me laughing my ass off while also thinking deeply about the inequities and absurdities Davis skewers so cleverly. From the brilliantly drawn cast of characters to the gratifying twists, I absolutely loved this book! A rollicking read and a phenomenal debut.” ―Deesha Philyaw, author of The Secret Lives of Church Ladies
Andie Davis grew up in Barbados before moving with her family to the US, where she attended Howard University and Harvard Law School. She works as a global development advisor focused on sustainability.
Naomi Jackson is the author The Star Side of Bird Hill, a novel set in Barbados. She is a Fulbright recipient, and Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at Rutgers University-Newark.
