Ancient Stone Anchors and Making a Killock AnchorDate: September 13, 2025

In the 1950s, early u/w archaeologist Honor Frost began studying stone anchors in the Mediterranean. She developed a typology of
different stone anchor types including hybrid anchors of sedimentary rocks and wood. Starting with a PPT presentation, we’ll examine the history and types of these anchors, as well as killocks (aka-killick, at right), made of branches, rocks, and rope.
The culminating activity will be a group project to craft several killocks; the materials provided. Killocks are still used today in
traditional-fishing villages in Canada and the British Isles. Bring work gloves and a folding chair. Moreover, bring a jacket and hat [Class limited to 12 people.]
In 2025, the French & Indian War Society at Lake George, Inc. will sponsor four enrichment workshops to be held at Fort William Henry Museum (48 Canada St., Lake George, NY). The program also serves as a fund raiser for the not-for-profit organization. Classes are “in person” and at the moment, no Zoom. Participants receive a certificate of attendance. Cost per workshop: $30 (for a non-Society member) and $15 (for a Society member). No audio or video recording is permitted. Preregistration is required.
