Who were the ancient Egyptians?
What do we know about their art, culture, beliefs and daily life?
Children begin a journey of learning, play and discovery in this exhibition as they find out about the lives of the pharaohs and the ancient Egyptian people, the building of the pyramids and the beautiful art objects they made for eternity.
Presented in the NGV children’s gallery, the exhibition features a selection of works from the NGV antiquities collection, hands-on activities, and cinematic screenings.
Highlights include a hand-painted case once belonging to Iret-[en]-Hor-eru, son of Djed-Ptah-f-Ankh, dated 747–600 BCE and the richly detailed Head covering of Padihorpasheraset set in a room of gleaming gold.
Next to the golden chamber is an enthralling space featuring floor-to-ceiling hieroglyphic imagery. Here, children can experiment with the technique of frottage, or rubbing, to create their names in hieroglyphs and make a keepsake of their visit. And in a play zone stacked with blocks, preschoolers can build magnificent towering pyramid formations.
This exhibition equips young visitors with a curious and playful foundation to begin building their knowledge of cultures from other countries and time periods. Combine this experience with a once-in-a-lifetime visit to Pharaoh, the NGV’s 2024 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® exhibition, and the whole family is set for an adventure.
