Shenandoah Valley VA - Blue Ridge Singers is thrilled to present our spring concert series once again with orchestra. Jake Runestad’s freshly composed The Lighthouse Keeper will anchor our program. Completed in January 2024 Runestad explains:
“The Lighthouse Keeper an ode to a dear friend is a series of vignettes capturing a life journey of joy beauty loss and renewal. From the excitement of a road trip to Joshua Tree National Park to a magical midnight swim in the Spanish Mediterranean to the death of a friend at Point Reyes National Seashore to celebrating new beginnings at Yosemite National Park this work is a deeply personal yet powerfully universal expression of a life shared in friendship.”
The work is in five movements based on texts by the composer Witter Bynner Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Kahil Gibran and Edna St.Vincent Millay. Sentimental and deep the music reflects the texts through the luscious harmonies and expansive melodies. Additional works surrounding the themes of “light” and ”the sea” will accompany this larger work. From a modern setting of Gregorian Chant to a nineteenth century poem to an Irish folksong to a boisterous pirate drinking song to a rhythmic spiritual this concert is sure to be thoroughly entertaining!
