About this Event

This time, Las Juanas want to dedicate this performance to all those women who have had a direct or indirect impact on our lives. For example, our great-grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, friends, and public women who have paved the way for past, present, and future generations of women through their defense of rights —particularly those of indigenous women, human and animal rights, as well as those of our planet. We inherit, in our maternal DNA, the total disobedience and resistance to the destruction of our Mother Earth, Pachamama.

Performers:

LAS JUANAS (María Alba-Sánchez, María Eugenia Bravo-Calderara, Mabel Encinas-Sánchez, Consuelo Rivera-Fuentes, Isabel Ros-López, Denisse Vargas-Bolaños) and three guests.

Las Juanas

Las Juanas is a literary group of women of Latin American and Spanish heritage. For the last twelve years, they have been sharing each other’s writing, running numerous workshops, and performing their work. They address issues of migration, displacement, exile, women’s rights, climate change, and human rights, more broadly.

Along with several fanzines, Las Juanas have published two bilingual anthologies, one of poetry and one of short stories entitled Wonder-makers: Navigators of the Thames, now running on its second edition published by Victorina Press. According to Las Juanas: “Writing implies a commitment to change ourselves and to contribute to transforming this world. The personal is political.” In their texts, Las Juanas sustain that they cherish difference to pave the way to equality.

MARIJO ALBA-SÁNCHEZ

She writes, draws, and takes photographs, her great passions. Her work has been published in fanzines and anthologies such as Visitors II, Reading poetry in London, Wonder-Makers, Navigators of the Thames: Poetry; Wonder-Makers, Navigators of the Thames: Narrative; and in Violeta Walks in Foreign Lands.

MARÍA EUGENIA BRAVO-CALDERARA

She has been a poet and a writer ever since she was a child. She is an ex-political prisoner of the Chilean dictatorship. This experience left a permanent mark in her life and in most of her literary work where human rights are always prevalent. She came to the UK as a political exile in 1975. Her poetry and short stories have been translated into English and other European languages.

MABEL ENCINAS-SÁNCHEZ

Mabel became a migrant by fluke (later she remembered that her mum and dad were also migrants – but inside Mexico). She works in education, which she considers a political act and an act of love and hope. Her first book, I am Adila from Gaza, is aimed at children, and deals with themes of loss and hope.

CONSUELO RIVERA-FUENTES

Consuelo is the co-founder of this literary group. She is also a Chilean ex-political prisoner. She is a teacher, a sociologist, a writer, and a feminist editor. Currently, she is the Managing Director of Victorina Press. She lives on a farm in Staffordshire with her partner Lynda and their three doggies.

ISABEL ROS-LÓPEZ

Isabel was born a migrant and has been writing poetry and songs ever since she was a child. She is still at it. She wants to change the world with others, with you. Peace and social justice. Together. She publishes and records whenever she can; mostly works, sings, and performs. She says that intersectional feminism rocks!

DENISSE VARGAS-BOLAÑOS

Denisse was born in Bolivia. She is a feminist and a poet out of intuition and necessity. She likes warm places, but not global warming. She is passing through London as she has been everywhere. Sometimes, she uses her internal migrations as an excuse to write poems in secret code. She misses her family every day.
