About this Event

To be an Ancestor in Training is to embody the elevated ancestor we want to be in the present moment.

What does it mean to be an ancestor in training in the face of climate grief, hyperconsumption and an uncertain future? Can you be somebody's ancestor without having direct descendants? How can we live lives that our descendants and the next seven generations can be proud of? Given the state of the world, what environment will the next three generations inherit?

Let's talk about sustainable legacies.

During this interactive session, collaborators will explore these questions through a guided healing practice featuring mixed media, discussion and writing with the intention of rediscovering how to navigate being Ancestors in Training. Attendees will receive access to the syllabus of the same name so that the roots of the conversations grown during the session can travel to their communities.

This is a bonus session of the AIT experience that is hosted at Weeksville Heritage Center!

ABOUT WEEKSVILLE

Weeksville Heritage Center is an historic site and cultural center in Central Brooklyn that uses education, arts and a social justice lens to preserve, document and inspire engagement with the history of Weeksville, one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America, and the Historic Hunterfly Road Houses.

SAFETY

Please note: As an organization founded with Black liberation in mind, Weeksville aims to support all Black people, including disabled, immunocompromised, and otherwise vulnerable community members––including our staff, artists, local residents, and visitors––always, and especially through the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

As such, we require face coverings that cover nose, mouth, and chin indoors at all public programs. We highly encourage the use of high-quality masks such as KN95s and KF94s at all times, and ask that all who come on-site remain mindful of maintaining a safe physical distance.

We will reach capacity quickly as space is limited out of an abundance of caution. Please do not RSVP if you do not intend to make it.

SPACE GRANT

In alignment with our commitment to providing a convening place for residents of Central Brooklyn, Weeksville’s doors remain open each Wednesday with extended hours as we host local organizations and creative individuals who are leading community organizing efforts, providing much-needed services or outlets for artistic expression in our community.

This expression continues Season 5 of Ancestors in Training. Explore more at www.ancestorsintraining.org
