SYNOPSIS:
From the Tony Award-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime, comes this dazzling musical based on the beloved 1997 animated movie. From the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920’s, a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat to find out if she is indeed Princess Anastasia. With soaring vocals and such classic songs from the motion picture like “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December”,
Anastasia: The Musical is a romantic adventure for the whole family about discovering who you are and embracing who you’re meant to be.
AVAILABLE ROLES and CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
Seeking performers of all ethnicities, ages, and types.
*Note: The role of Anya has been cast. HOWEVER, we are seeking STRONG UNDERSTUDIES for all roles.
ANYA (UNDERSTUDY): Female, 20's-30s (Disney-esque Soprano/Mezzo: G3-F5, Belt to D5) Brave, fiery, witty, and above all determined. Her mantra, “Home, love, family” is her goal. All she knows is her
family is in Paris and she will find them however she can. Strong mover.
DMITRY: Male, 20's-30s (Baritenor, A2-G4) A scoundrel with a heart of gold. A street rat who grew into a conman, Dima does all he does to get out of poverty and is not above lying, cheating, and stealing to do so–that is until he meets Anya. What starts as just another scheme turns into the adventure of a lifetime that requires Dimitry to look inward and figure out how to put the one he loves before himself. Strong mover.
VLAD: Male, 40s-50s (Comic Baritone, A2-F4). Dmitry’s partner in crime (literally) and surrogate father. Before the revolution he scammed his way through society pretending to be a count. Vlad is dramatic,
crafty, and a big softie at heart. While he, like Dmitry, is not above lying, cheating, and stealing, he cares greatly for his loved ones and is generally affable, though he can be calculating when he needs to be. Strong mover with excellent comic timing.
DOWAGER EMPRESS: Female, 50s-70s (Mezzo, F3-Bb4) The formidable and imperious grandmother of Anastasia, she has lost everything she once held dear and must now put up with imposter upon
imposter never allowing her to grieve in peace. She is icy, proud, and regal to all but her family, and commands authority and attention the minute she enters a room. Excellent actress.
GLEB: Male, 30s-40s (High Baritenor, A2-Gb4) The villain of the show, though not a bad person. He fully believes in the Communist ideals he follows. Deeply conflicted, Gleb’s infatuation (and borderline obsession) with Anya leads to his battle with the idea of doing one’s duty vs. doing what is right.
COUNTESS LILY: Female, 40s-50s (Jazzy Mezzo, G3-C5 w/ B5) The lady in waiting to the Dowager Empress, Lily is clever, dutiful, and brassy. She deals with her exile from Russia with a sort of resigned dark humor…and a LOT of vodka. She and Vlad were once an item (unbeknownst to her oblivious
husband) and rekindle their romance upon re-uniting. Strong dancer with excellent comic timing.
YOUNG ANASTASIA/ALEXEI: Female, 8-12 (Child Soprano, C4-C5) The willful, brave, proud, and precocious youngest daughter of the Tsar. She has a special bond with her grandmother (whom she calls Nana). Will double as Alexei, the younger brother of the Romanov siblings, as well as in the ensemble. Must move well.
COUNT IPOLITOV: Male, 40s-60s (Baritone, A2-E4) A dignified and faithful aristocrat of the Russian court. Deeply loyal to the Romanov family, he embodies grace, old-world manners, and devotion to tradition. Though age and grief weigh on him, his presence conveys warmth, steadiness, and respect. Excellent singer and actor with gravitas and emotional depth. Will double in the ensemble and potentially cover other tracks.
COUNT LEOPOLD: Male, 30s-50s (Baritone/Tenor, B2-G4) A stiff, pompous aristocrat in the Russian court, more concerned with appearances than loyalty or warmth. Often played with comic edge, he
represents the formality and pretension of the old order. Strong character actor who can balance gravitas with humor. Will double in the ensemble and potentially cover other tracks.
TSAR NICOLAS II: Male, 30s-50s (Baritone, A2-E4) The last Emperor of Russia, a noble yet weary leader facing the fall of his empire. Regal, compassionate, and paternal, he strives to protect his family while burdened with the weight of history. Should command quiet authority and dignity. Strong mover/ballroom dance. Will double in the ensemble.
TSARINA ALEXANDRA: Female, 30s-50s (Mezzo Soprano, A3-E5) The last Empress of Russia, elegant and maternal, devoted to her children and her faith. She carries herself with grace and poise even in the face of tragedy. Warm, gentle, and spiritual, she provides emotional grounding for her
family. Strong mover. Will double in the ensemble.
GORLINSKY: Male, 30s-50s (Baritone, B2-G4) A rigid Bolshevik official, loyal to the new regime. Stern, humorless, and unyielding, he embodies the cold bureaucracy of revolutionary Russia. Strong
character actor who can project intimidation and authority with precision. Will double in the ensemble.
ODETTE: Female, 20s-30s (Dance Soloist) Principal dancer in the Swan Lake ballet sequence. Must be a highly skilled classical ballerina with strong pointe technique, fluid artistry, and the ability to convey both grace and tragic beauty through movement. Ethereal, elegant, and commanding on stage. Will double in the ballet ensemble.
PRINCE SIEGFRIED: Male, 20s-30s (Dance Soloist) A featured dancer in the ballet sequence, portraying the romantic lead of Swan Lake. Must be a highly skilled dancer with excellent partnering skills, strong technique, and commanding stage presence. Should convey nobility, passion, and dramatic intensity through movement. Will double in the ballet ensemble.
BALLET ENSEMBLE: Four boys and four girls with excellent dance ability, particularly in ballet and ballroom. These dancers will be heavily featured in such tracks as the Romanov children, Neva club dancers, and Royal Ballet Company. Other featured dance soloist roles include TEEN ANYA, VON
ROTHBART, and the SWAN LAKE CYGNETS.
ADULT ENSEMBLE: All genders and ages, from teens to 60s. Excellent singers and actors to carry a soaring score and heavy storytelling. Many featured supporting roles, including PAULINA, DUNYA, & MARFA (fake-Anastasia auditioners), COMMISSIONER & COUNTESS GREGORY, SERGEI THE DOORMAN, Marketeers, Reporters, Drunkards, Parisians, and more. Strong movement a plus, though not required.
