About this Event
Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children’s Theater presents an interactive and family-friendly production of Anansi, the Trickster Spider: A West African Folktale. Children 6 and up are invited to participate in a pre-performance workshop and be part of the show. (Registration required)
This event is offered in connection with the exhibition Infinite Passage, a retrospective of work by Guyana-born artist Carl E. Hazlewood. The title of the exhibition references the passage of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic, as well as the landscapes and seascapes of Guyana.
The beloved and comical character “Anansi” is the infamous trickster of the Ashanti People of West Africa. The tale, “How Anansi Brought the Stories Down,” describes how Anansi, with the aid of the children in the audience, tricks the animals of the jungle and retrieves the stolen stories of the world from Nyame, the Sky God.
Artist and actress Natalie Resto will lead a mask-making and drama workshop before the performance to teach children how to be part of the show and play the roles of various jungle animals.
Daniel Saed plays the lead role of Anansi. Company co-founder and artistic director Leslie Elias, who wrote and directed the play, portrays numerous roles, including Crocodile, Monkey, Lion and Queen Bee. Keyboardist Brian Bender provides live musical accompaniment.
An award-winning educational theater company based in Connecticut, Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children’s Theater is renowned for its fantastic masks and captivating costumes made by Ellen Moon, and for its innovative interaction with children. The company has been performing in schools, museums, libraries and festivals throughout the United States since 1980. Photos and videos may be taken during this event for use in BMAC promotional materials.
