About this Event
Join Claudia Hammond and a panel of experts as they delve into the history, evidence and mysteries around anaesthesia. You'll hear about how anaesthesia works and the current issues related to it, such as sustainability and the global inequality of safe access to anaesthetics.
Claudia will present the programme and interview the speakers. Then, the audience will have the chance to ask questions.
The event will be recorded and edited into a programme to be broadcast on the BBC World Service as part of ‘The Evidence’ series. After broadcast, the episode will be available on the BBC website.
Contributors
Claudia Hammond is an award-winning broadcaster, writer and psychology lecturer. She is the presenter of ‘All in the Mind’ and ‘Mind Changers’ on BBC Radio 4, and ‘The Evidence’ and ‘Health Check’ on the BBC World Service.
Dr Kevin Fong is a Consultant Anaesthetist at UCL Hospitals in London. and Professor of Public Engagement and Innovation at University College London. Kevin has a wealth of experience in the field and still works as a consultant anaesthetist, including as a helicopter emergency medical service doctor.
Dr Jennifer Hunter is Emeritus Professor of Anaesthesia and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool. Jennie has a wealth of experience, having spent decades in clinical and academic anaesthetics, and is still active in anaesthetic research. She was also the first woman to become Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Anaesthesia.
Dr Bruce Biccard is Nuffield Professor of Anaesthetic Science at the University of Oxford. He has recently moved to the UK from South Africa, where he worked at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. He is also the author of the book ‘Safer surgery for Africa: challenges and solutions’. He has carried out a huge amount of work into improving surgery outcomes across Africa and in low or middle-income countries around the world.
Need to know
We’ll be in the Reading Room on level 2. You can walk up the spiral staircase to the Reading Room door, or take the lift up and then head left from the Library Desk.
Booking a ticket for a free, in-person event does not guarantee you a place. You should aim to arrive 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to start to claim your place. If you do not arrive on time, your place may be given to someone on the waiting list.
Access
This event will have British Sign Language interpretation. It will be live transcribed with sppech to text. The captions will be displayed on a screen in-venue.
