Born in London and now based in Berlin, Ashley Cheal is a tattoo artist and multidisciplinary creator whose work spans tattooing, painting, sculpture, and installation. Since relocating to Berlin in 2016, he has continually expanded his practice, blending traditional techniques with contemporary forms to explore themes of mental health, masculinity, abandonment, and the search for connection in an ever-evolving world.
Ashley’s debut solo exhibition, “An Ordinary Man”, held at The Ballery, marks a significant moment in his creative journey. The show delves into the personal and universal experiences of modern manhood, examining the emotional pressures and challenges individuals face today. With the tagline “A Reconstructive Anthology of a Man’s Need to Relate”, the exhibition invites viewers into a dialogue about vulnerability, self-discovery, and the human need for connection.
In addition to tattooing, Ashley has increasingly incorporated body casting, large-scale painting, and installation art into his work. This shift has allowed for a deeper exploration of the human form and emotion, creating immersive experiences that engage viewers on multiple levels—physically, emotionally, and intellectually.
Drawing from pivotal moments in his own life, Ashley seeks to create art that resonates on a personal level while also fostering broader points of relatability. With an eye towards the future, his aim is to bring these conversations to global audiences, creating connections across cultures and experiences while continuing to evolve as an artist.
