ARTIST STATEMENT: Tribadometry is a series of collages depicting two pairs of legs in different lesbian sexual positions, overlaid with mathematical text and diagrams. The project started as a response to the heteronormative misconception that lesbian sex isn’t “real” sex. Tribadometry offers a non-explanation in text too small to read by casual observation, because, like lesbian sex, it doesn’t need to be understood by those not practicing it. Playfully, some of the math comes from solving made up problems while some comes from definitions and proofs. The word tribade, with ancient origins meaning "to rub," has had its definition oscillate between a general term for lesbianism to a homophobic slur for women perceived masculine enough to penetrate their partners. For this project, tribadism is distilled down to its fundamental properties- a queer sex act, involving a vulva being rubbed on another person’s body- making it gender inclusive and exclusively queer. Math embellishes each collage to celebrate tribadism both visually and conceptually; decorating ideas with ideas.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Megan Levine is a self-taught artist and mathematics educator in the San Francisco Bay Area, making collages with hand painted paper, ink, and acrylic on stretched canvas. Driving this practice is a fascination with relationships— human, mathematical, and linguistic— and how they translate into abstract form. Levine’s work has exhibited in shows including the Big Gay Art Show (AZ, 2022), Crocker-Kingsley at Blue Line Arts (CA, 2022) and her solo pop up exhibition Circular Relativity (CA 2022)
