About this Event
An Iconic Jazz Night by The G&T Duo

Rachma Lim (piano)
Ernest Tan (guitar)
Namie Rasman (guest vocalist)

Veteran Singapore based, international jazz pianist Rachma Lim and guitarist Ernest Tan introduce an evening of iconic, remade jazz classics and familiar favorites with their venerable ensemble - the G&T duo.

The G&T duo is a product of 9 months of hard work and practice between them, commonly known as "shedding," or "woodshedding," in the world of jazz terminology. The duo met via the weekly Sunday jazz jam, hosted by Rachma herself - a platform that enables musicians from everywhere to play with each other in a typical jazz band setting. Cue the perennial Gin and Tonic sipped in between songs!

Part of this initiative comprises efforts to practice playing one song over a period of a few months. They work on details such as lyrical phrasing, chord progressions, and common melodies being broken down, reshaped and reconstructed in order to take on a new arrangement on a familiar tune, otherwise known as a "contrafact."

One such example of Rachma and Ernest's efforts include Jimmy Van Heusen's "It Could Happen to You," remade into what they have affectionately titled "Fried Banana," or "Pisang Goreng" as expressed in Bahasa Indonesia and the Malay Language. Drop by to find out why!

Expect slick introductions to tightly arranged songs, attention-grabbing harmonies and creatively inspired arrangements, along with many other tunes and contrafacts alike for a wholesome evening of wholesome, foot-tapping jazz!

Artist Bio
Rachma Lim - piano

Pint-sized, but potent pianist, Rachma Lim, hails from North Sumatra. Even before earning her Masters Degree in Jazz Studies at New York City’s Queens College, Rachma had performed extensively with jazz big bands and trios; even backing internationally-touring vocalists. A recording artist and consummate stage performer, Rachma journeys comfortably through cross-over world music, as she does with her own compositions.

In 2018-2019, Rachma released her EP, The Nocturnal Chapters, which features her original jazz compositions recorded at Abbey Road Studio No. 2. The track Wishing Well from the EP has gained worldwide recognition, reflecting her dedication to creating unique compositions and rearranging contemporary works that inspire her to connect with fellow co-creators and audiences.

Rachma’s passion and expertise in jazz is a testament to her outstanding contributions to the global music scene.

Ernest Tan - guitar

Other than enjoying sipping gin tonic, Ernest specialises in jazz performance and is graduating with a BA(Hons) Music from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2022. He first picked up the guitar at the age of 12, and has since developed a strong passion for creating and sharing the joy of music. During his time at LASALLE, he was placed under the mentorship and guidance of industry veterans such as Joshua Wan, Andrew Lim, Christy Smith and Chok Kerong. He has since performed at numerous venues such as The Esplanade and Blu Jaz Cafe with bands including the Jazz Association Singapore Youth Orchestra, and is a recipient of the Jazz Association (Singapore) Scholarship.

American jazz guitarists Peter Bernstein and Bobby Broom were two of the biggest influences in Ernest’s development as a guitarist. Bernstein’s ability to tell a story with the complexity of his melodies captivated Ernest and brought him closer to jazz, while Broom’s raw and soulful lyricism resonated with Ernest.
