More about Nishla Smith:
Nishla is a vocalist and writer driven by a desire to tell stories. Her unique musical sensibility, along with this preoccupation with narrative is recurrent throughout a startlingly diverse array of musical projects. Currently based in the UK, she’s recently performed at Ronnie Scott’s, Kings Place and Manchester Jazz Festival.
Nishla is a City Music Foundation artist, and part of London Jazz Festival’s prestigious ‘Take Five’ cohort for 2022. She is one third of cross disciplinary arts collective Ulita, and leads an original jazz band, the Nishla Smith Quintet, with whom she released a debut album last Autumn on Whirlwind Recordings. Downbeat USA said of the release "While Smith’s singing is an entrancing beauty of its own, the true trump cards are the lyrics and melodies… she creates a darkly gorgeous interior sonic world.”
Nishla is particularly interested in cross-disciplinary work, and her current projects involve collaboration with visual artists, theatre-makers and dancers. She began 2022 somewhat usually, spending three months playing a bird in Atri Banerjee's acclaimed production of 'Kes', and later this year will turn her hand to a new interdisciplinary project: 'Travels Backwards', a collaboration with a Manchester dance company.
Tonight she’s joined by a wonderful band of Singaporean jazz musicians to play modern interpretations of jazz standards and a selection from her debut album, ‘Friends With Monsters’.
