Books & Books presents Philip Smith: Magnetic Fields—the definitive catalog of his MoCA survey, spanning 50 years of mystic art.
About this Event

Books & Books presents an evening with Philip Smith in conversation with Chana Sheldon, Executive Director of MoCA, to celebrate Magnetic Fields—the definitive catalog of Smith’s MoCA survey. Spanning five decades, Smith’s work blends magic, metaphysics, botany, and Cold War codes into a unique pictographic language featured in major museum collections worldwide.
About the Book:

Philip Smith: Magnetic Fields is the definitive catalog of the sweeping museum survey of Smith’s paintings at MoCA, North Miami. Starting with the historic Pictures exhibition work, the catalog documents the mysterious pictographic language that Smith has produced over five decades. His images include Cold War spy manuals, magic, botany as well as the mysteries of metaphysics and other dimensions. His work is widely collected by US and international museums. Essays by curator/scholar Robin Clark, curator of the exhibition, Charles Wylie, Curator of Photography, The Amon Carter Museum of American Art and interview by Chana Sheldon, Director MoCA, North Miami.

About the Artist:

Philip Smith’s paintings are in the permanent collection of over twenty institutions including the Whitney, Perez Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Houston Museum of Fine Arts. He is also the author of the memoir Walking Through Walls.
