About this Event
Acclaimed writer Joanna Croston, the Director of Mountain Culture at the Banff Centre, will be in Nelson on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. to share stories and photos from her groundbreaking new book,
Mountaineering Women is the first publication of its kind—a richly illustrated collection of remarkable stories and achievements of twenty of the most daring women mountaineers from around the globe. The book seeks to readdress a narrative that frequently focuses on the exploits of white, male "explorers."
The climbers featured come from a wide range of nationalities, and each of their compelling stories—from Lynn Hill becoming the first person to free-climb the Nose route of El Capitan to Lydia Bradey becoming the first woman to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen—is accompanied by a specially commissioned ink illustration and evocative black-and-white photographs. Additionally, three sections of 16-page, full-color photo spreads reveal each of the mountaineers in their element.
Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. for a showtime of 7:30 p.m. Books will be on sale before the presentation, with a book signing immediately following.
