About this Event
Join us for an enlightening evening with Dr Shahed Yousaf, author of ‘Stitched Up: Stories of Life and Death from a Pr*son Doctor’. Why would anyone want to work with thieves, murderers and rapists? Told from the inside out, this is a harrowing, humorous and hard-hitting tale of life behind bars by a Pr*son doctor who has seen it all. Literally.
About the Book
Dr Shahed Yousaf, known to his patients as Dr Y, spends his time running between emergencies – from overdoses to assaults, from cell fires to suicides – with one hand perpetually hovering over the panic button. Being a Pr*son doctor is not for the faint-hearted. Dr Y chooses not to ask what crimes his patients have committed because he doesn’t need to know – they are patients first and prisoners second – and he argues that any one of us could end up on the wrong side of the law.
Dr Y describes what it is really like working day-to-day as a doctor in a Pr*son system that is massively overcrowded and drastically under-resourced. But while the system is failing around them, he and his colleagues do their best to prop it up and deliver care to their patients.
About the Author
Dr Shahed Yousaf grew up in Birmingham. After qualifying as a GP, he worked in prisons and with the homeless community. He has a special interest in substance misuse and detox therapies. He is interested in working-class narratives and therapeutic aspects of literature.
Reviews
“A raw and honest glimpse into the frightening but rewarding life of a Pr*son GP. Stories that will curl your toes, make you laugh our loud, and break your heart all that the same time. Dr Y is everything we would ever want in our own GP – caring, pragmatic, self-effacing and hugely competent. What a tour-de-force!” - Professor Dame Sue Black
