About this Event

We’re delighted to be joined by space scientist and bestselling author Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock to celebrate the release of Webb’s Universe, the definitive book on the James Webb Space Telescope, including its most stunning images to date.

Despite the huge advances in space technology in recent decades, much of the universe remains a source of mystery. Keen to follow on from the findings of the Hubble telescope, NASA successfully launched the James Webb Space Telescope in December 2021 to study every phase of the history of our universe.

The first stunningly clear images of the very depths of the universe using Webb’s groundbreaking infrared technology were released in July 2022, forever changing the way we see and understand the origins of our existence. In Webb’s Universe, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock demystifies these stunning pictures and breaks down the essential science behind each image, explaining what we’re seeing and learning from the world’s most powerful space telescope.

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE is a space scientist, science communicator and presenter of the BBC ’s The Sky at Night. She completed a degree in Physics at Imperial College London, where she first realized her love of space telescopes, and went on to specialize in optics, which later formed part of her PhD. After helping to build a spectrograph for Gemini South, one of the biggest telescopes in the world, she continued to work on telescope instruments, including one for JWST.

She is Managing Director of Science Innovation Ltd, through which she organizes public engagement activities that show school children and adults the wonders of space. She is president-elect of the British Science Association and an honorary research associate of UC L’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. She is the author of numerous books on space, including two award winning children's books: Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System and Am I Made of Stardust?

Please note: Book and ticket options include a copy of Webb’s Universe (RRP. £25) which will be available for collection on the night.

If you are unable to attend on the night, please be aware that we will only be able to reserve your book for up to 2 weeks. Copies must be collected in store.
