About this Event

Culture Club and Roe River Books are delighted to announce that Arthur Mathews, co-creator of Father Ted and contributor to some of the most iconic comedy shows of the past 30 years, will be in conversation in Roe River Books, Dundalk on Friday July 26th at 7.00pm to talk about his latest book Walled in by Hate: Kevin O’Higgins, his friends and enemies.

'Walled in by Hate', published by Merrion Press, is a fascinating exploration of the short yet remarkable life of Kevin O’Higgins, one of the most divisive figures in the early years of the Irish State, whose legacy and career are still debated to this day. Mathews examines O’Higgins through the prism of his friends and enemies, the relentless M**der manhunt that followed his assassination, as well as his relationship with Lady Lavery - hidden from his wife Brigid - that lasted for several years until his death.

Arthur Mathews was born in Meath in 1959. With Graham Linehan he co-created and wrote the classic comedies Father Ted and Big Train. He has also written for some of the most iconic comedy shows of the past 30 years including: The Fast Show, Harry Enfield and Chums, The Catherine Tate Show and Brass Eye amongst many others. He co-wrote the stage musical I, Keano and the feature film Wide Open Spaces. With Matt Berry he has co-written the television shows Toast of London and Toast of Tinseltown (each a winner of The Rose d’Or) as well as Squeamish About and The Road To Brexit. He also wrote the book Well-Remembered Days, an imagined autobiography of ‘Eoin O’Ceallaigh’, ‘a writer, poet, nationalist, playwright, civil servant, commentator and champion of the traditional values of Ireland’.
