About this Event

This gathering will feature a brief discussion celebrating the recent publication of an Educational Case Report in Academic Psychiatry—a significant milestone highlighting an innovative, evidence-informed approach to physician education:

Communicating with Patients with Major Neurocognitive Disorder:

An Improv-Based Curriculum for Psychiatry Residents

(Published September 2025)

Authors:

Rohini Kallianpur, MD

Mary E. Camp, MD

Andrea Kyprianou Baum, M.Ed, LPC

Jayme M. Palka, MD

Developed in collaboration with residents from UT Southwestern Medical Center, this peer-reviewed case report examines how applied improvisation can support physicians in navigating the complex communication, relational, and emotional challenges of caring for patients with major neurocognitive disorders. Its publication marks a meaningful contribution to the growing body of research focused on humane, skills-based approaches to dementia care.

Following the discussion, guests will experience a brief, interactive introduction to Improv for Caregivers, a community-based program from Stomping Ground Comedy designed to help caregivers build communication skills, emotional regulation, and adaptability in the face of dementia-related change. The program is intended as a practical referral option physicians may recommend to patients’ families.

This evening is designed to:

  • Highlight an innovative educational model recently published in the academic literature
  • Introduce a caregiver support resource beyond the clinical setting
  • Create space for connection among physicians working in geriatrics, psychiatry, neurology, and dementia care (business cards encouraged)

Cocktails and light appetizers will be served.

We hope you’ll join us for thoughtful conversation, meaningful connection, and a fresh perspective on supporting caregivers beyond the exam room.

Our Improv for Caregivers program is generously supported by AWARE North Texas.
