As a part of the Gala Celebration on June 19th, and in commemoration of Juneteenth, The BSO is honored to present the world premiere of “Destined Words,” by Baltimore composer James Lee III in partnership with Baltimore spoken-word artist Wordsmith.
This evening's event will be a conversation between James Lee III and Wordsmith about the ground-breaking work, moderated by Scott Simon.

James Lee III, born 1975 in St. Joseph, Michigan cites as his major composition teachers Michael Daugherty, William Bolcom, and Bright Sheng. He was also a composition fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center where he studied with Michael Gandolfi. Since Dr. Lee’s graduation with a D.M.A. in composition from the University of Michigan in 2005, his orchestral works have been commissioned and premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony Orchestra, and the orchestras of Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Omaha, Pasadena, Memphis, Grand Rapids, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Akron, and have been conducted by such artists as Leonard Slatkin, Marin Alsop, Michael Tilson Thomas, Juanjo Mena, David Lockington, Thomas Wilkins, and others. During the 2019-2020 season, Sukkot Through Orion’s Nebula is scheduled to be performed by the Louisiana Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has also commissioned James Lee III to compose Amer’ican, which will be premiered in April 2020.
Anthony Parker better known as "Wordsmith" is a Baltimore-based songwriter, performer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Wordsmith makes hip-hop with a strong motivational message. His mission is to entertain and educate through a message of purpose while providing clean, quality, marketable Music for the Masses. Philanthropy has always been a major part of Wordsmith's core values and his partnerships with Project Plase Homeless Shelter in Baltimore and Kids Connection Haiti keeps his purpose alive and well. As of July 2020, Wordsmith officially opened his nonprofit “Rise with a Purpose, Inc.”
Scott Simon is one of America's most admired writers and broadcasters. He is the host of Weekend Edition Saturday and is one of the hosts of NPR's morning news podcast Up First. He has reported from all fifty states, five continents, and ten wars, from El Salvador to Sarajevo to Afghanistan and Iraq. His books have chronicled character and characters, in war and peace, sports and art, tragedy and comedy.

This event is part of Summer Break Baltimore, a fun, free program for all ages that encourages literacy and learning in our community.
