An evening discussion on "woke" education and a new children's book by Dr. Matthew Mehan, Hillsdale in D.C.'s Director of Academic Programs.
About this Event

Dr. Matthew Mehan, Hillsdale in D.C.'s Director of Academic Programs and Assistant Professor of the Van Andel Graduate School of Government, will discuss the current crisis in education. The evening will also include a brief reading of his new children's book - The Handsome Little Cygnet, a presentation of original illustrations, and a book signing afterwards.

About the Speaker

Dr. Matthew Mehan is a poet, scholar, teacher, speech writer, and musician. He earned his Ph.D. in Literature from the University of Dallas, studying Shakespeare's teachings on poetry as an indispensable part of a free, just, and peaceful society. He is a professor at Hillsdale College in Washington DC, where he is the Director of Academic Programs and Assistant Professor of Government for the Van Andel Graduate School of Government. He is also the author of Mr. Mehan’s Mildly Amusing Mythical Mammals, a best-selling book of poems that one critic called “a new classic” in children’s literature.

About the Book

The Handsome Little Cygnet is a refreshing change from today's woke children's books, now being published by the score. In contrast, this story presents images of a strong family—especially that rarest of birds in kids' books, a good father—and of the virtue and heart needed to resist the strong pull of identity politics that tempts our children to try to be something they're not. Featuring landmarks and wildlife from Manhattan’s Central Park, this short, touching, and elegant book features beautiful, lightly metered prose and more than twenty gorgeous watercolors by master artist and illustrator, John Folley.
