Al Diaz engages in an unapologetic dialogue of truth that cuttingly points out society’s ills misfortunes injustices and follies. With his indisputably unique rhetoric Diaz’ poetic and text-centric art speaks of corporate control misguided government cultures of excess disposable values widespread apathy and bittersweet nostalgia.
In this latest show An Empire Fallen Diaz reveals a recent mixed media body of work that responds to frustrating world news along with other works previously unseen in New York City. Audiences can expect to discover historical and contemporary photographic images layered with paint and paired with politically charged social commentary on canvas in a variety of sizes that include rhythmic multiple panel sequences. This vibrantly colorful and accomplished collection demonstrates a breakthrough maturity and tension not to be missed by Diaz’ followers and it is sure to capture new admirers as well.
Al Diaz is a pioneering figure in American street art and a vital voice in the cultural history of New York City. As a first generation graffiti artist known as “BOMB-ONE” Diaz co-created the influential SAMO© project with Jean-Michel Basquiat a collaboration that remains central to contemporary art discourse. His current work repurposes NYC’s “WET PAINT” signs into clever socially reflective anagrams and installations.
Diaz’s art has been exhibited internationally and featured in major publications documentaries and academic archives. He’s a frequent speaker at museums universities and art fairs—including the Brooklyn Museum Smithsonian Institution Art Basel and Christie’s Education—where he explores the intersections of graffiti counterculture and creative resistance. His talks blend lived experience with artistic insight offering audiences a rare perspective on the evolution of urban expression.
