The cooperative presents its Saturday lunchtime Open Mic event in Ennis on Saturday, November 1st, from 12.30pm to 2pm, at Glór, Ennis. This fundraising event is an open mic session where participants and audience alike are encouraged to get into the spirit of things with fancy dress and are invited to donate €10 per person to support CPC.This Clare wide community of poets run by volunteers invites members, writers groups and visiting poets, established and novice, to come along to celebrate al things winter with this ‘An Cailleach’ themed event.
The Cailleach is known as the veiled one and is among the most ancient deities venerated in Ireland. Her realm is in the cold and ice of wintertime and is sometimes known as the land itself. She is in the North wind and in the stone. She is an aspect of the divine feminine that is the winter crone and transforms to Brigit, the maiden, at the first signs of Spring.
MC for the occasion is Ruth Marshall, one of the founders of The Poetry Collective. Her poetry is published in journals and anthologies, including: Washing Windows V; Hive Poetry Journal; The Stony Thursday Book; Skylight 47; The Art of Place; FIRE - Brigid and the Sacred Feminine; Drawn to the Light Press; Not the Time to be Silent; Into the Further Reaches. Known for her work as a storyteller, arts and heritage facilitator, Ruth is the author of 3 books: Celebrating Irish Festivals; Clare Folk Tales; and Limerick Folk Tales. Ruth feels honoured to be asked to represent the Cailleach for this special occasion as we welcome in the winter months.
Denise Ellison and her band Elysium will play from 12.30pm ahead of the Open Mic which will run for an hour from 1.00pm-2pm at Glór.
The Open Mic is an opportunity for poets, whether established or reading before an audience for the first time, to be heard and appreciated. Poets are invited to read one poem, maximum length 40 lines, as the demand for slots is high. Sign up for the Open Mic from noon to 12.25pm. Come along early to mingle and catch up with other poets.
