Noted architectural historian and Stamford native Wes Haynes will offer a fascinating exploration of Emerson Hall one of the city's most significant and historic buildings. Built in 1870 by the Second Universalist Society of Stamford Emerson Hall is a stunning example of English Country Reform Gothic architecture. “Gothic was an old style when the church was built” explains Haynes “but the way it was expressed in this building was novel at its time. He sees that moment as a confluence of forward thinking in both architecture and the congregation’s commitment to civic improvement. “Progressive thinking continues to radiate from this now historic building which brings the word monument to mind.” Haynes will introduce the audience to important figures from the Universalist community who helped shape the city that is Stamford.
A reception will follow the program.
This special afternoon is co-sponsored by Emerson Hall Foundation the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Stamford and Stamford Historic Center.
Suggested donation for the event is $20. All donations are tax deductible and help preserve the architectural legacy that is Emerson Hall.
