We bring you a sumptuous feast of songs on the theme of wonder, inspired by a quote found recently by Musical Director, Jane Pierard. “There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle. The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.” – Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955)Join us to discover some aspects of wonder and mystery in this concert programme. Motets based on the text of Latin hymns, set to music by Francis Poulenc and Morten Lauridsen, explore the wonder of the birth of Jesus. Other spiritual or religious themes also feature in works by contemporary composers; American Kinley Lange, Brazilian Daniel Bondaczuk and Swedish Fredrik Sixten.
Environmental themes are introduced in three very different compositions: an old Swedish song describing an idyllic scene in a pine forest, Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi”, and in Stephen Lange’s wonderful new work” Poipoia te Kakāno”, which asks us to “nurture the seed.”
Lovers of jazz will enjoy two poignant standards: “Skylark” and “Round Midnight” and if you like a good Musical, you will love the medley from “Oklahoma” which features the men of the choir in “cowboy” mode! Of course, Christmas is coming soon, so we will all enjoy some singalong Carols to encourage a festive mood.
Note the date in your diary now, come along to enjoy the music - and bring a friend! Pay at the door, cash only. Adults $25. concession $20. All are welcome!
