THE “BISHOP OF THE POOR” - Bishop Themi returns to Adelaide after 3 years in COVID exile. With the blessing and support of our Primate, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios and the presence of His Grace Bishop Silouan of Sinope, His Grace Bishop Themistocles of Sierra Leone will finally return to Adelaide to liturgize and preach at the Holy Monastery of Saint Nectarios, Croydon Park.
FROM ATHEIST TO BISHOP
Born in Alexandria of Egypt to Greek parents, His Grace Bishop Themistocles (Adamopoulos) of Sierra Leone migrated to Australia with his parents and sister at a very young age.
Bishop Themistocles grew up and went to school in Melbourne. As an adult, he became an existential atheist, a radical Marxist, and started a rock band ‘The Flies’ which appeared as a support act to such artists as Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.
Then Christ appeared to him and he believed in the Lord, going on to study theology at doctorate level, teaching in American universities and at St Andrew’s Theological College in Sydney.
MISSIONARY TO AFRICA
However, since 1999, ”Father Themi”, as he was known, began Orthodox missionary work in Africa; originally in Kenya, then later in Sierra Leone where he remains till this day.
Just six months ago, His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa elevated “Father Themi” to the office of Bishop. Now, as “Bishop Themi”, he continues his God-pleasing work in Sierra Leone - one of the poorest countries in the world.
Having built orphanages, schools, homes for the disabled, churches and a tertiary Teachers College, the “Bishop of the Poor” continues his missionary work amongst the poorest of the poor in Africa.
We have the honour and the privilege to hear how one person can make a difference and influence change in the lives of thousands of people in need.
We invite all Christians from all churches to come and hear his story, his journey and his plight to save children from poverty and how we can help support his mission to help the poor in Sierra Leone.
Please join us after the Divine Liturgy at the Hall of St Nectarios where lunch, sweets and coffee will be provided.
There will also be an auction and raffle prizes.
Donations welcome!
