About this Event
After over two years away, Surbiton Symphony Orchestra begins its foray back into the world of live performance, with a sunday afternoon concert of music linked with opera. Beethoven's 3rd overture to his only opera, Leonore (later retitled 'Fidelio') opens the concert, before soprano Emily Chapman joins the orchestra in Wagner's Wesendonck-Lieder, songs intimately linked with the conception and music of Tristan und Isolde.
After the interval, the orchestra performs the 5th Symphony of Vaughan Williams, music linked with the trauma of the second world war, a nostalgic longing for the past and hope for the future. The symphony heavily features music Vaughan Williams would later make use of in his opera The Pilgrim's Progress, which the composer spent decades working on from conception to completion.
The concert will take place on the afternoon of Sunday August 15th, with a start time of 15:00. Doors open at 14:15 and all necessary precautions have been taken to ensure the event is covid secure.
