Amwaaj is a Minnesota-based ensemble performing classical, folk and modern music of the Arab world on traditional instruments: oud, violin, nay, buzuq, riqq, and darbukkah or Egyptian tabla.Amwaaj will be joined by guest artist Rana Almishrawi on qanun.
Each of the Amwaaj members have spent years studying with noted practitioners of the art, including Palestinian oudist, violinist, composer and master educator Simon Shaheen and Lebanese nay and flute master Bassam Saba.
This is a rare opportunity to hear live classical Arabic music played on traditional instruments and to learn more about this elegant and sophisticated musical tradition, just one aspect of the rich world of Arab arts. This concert will appeal to lovers of acoustic music, European early music aficionados, and those curious about music and instruments from around the world.
There will be a short pre-concert talk.
Workshops to learn more about the music will be offered on Saturday. Details to be announced.
