Abstract
After a decade of hope for democratic transition from military rule to (semi)democracy, Myanmar has recently seen multiple forms of violence and human rights violations. The military committed genocidal acts against the Rohingya population, and staged a coup on 1 February 2021. It detained elected government officials, cracked down severely on peaceful protestors, and intensified its warfare on minority populations in the border areas. As violence continued, international attention quickly waned, and the people of Myanmar were left to fend for themselves. Popular reactions started peacefully but have evolved into a myriad of strategies, including armed resistance and the formation of a shadow government that competes for legitimacy with the military. This lecture investigates the multiple forms of resistance in Myanmar since the latest military coup. It discusses new forms of solidarity and recurrent debates regarding competing legitimacies, different resistance strategies, and the role of activists inside and outside the country.
