Join us for the opening event of Encounter’s premiere! You’re invited to engage with the creative team of Encounter alongside prominent theatre makers and cultural researchers for a thought-provoking discussion and exchange. Explore the creation of Encounter and the representation of Chinese narratives on Aotearoa’s stages. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect and be inspired!
Encounter is part of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s Six Degrees Festival, presented in collaboration with BATS Theatre. Created by a team of Chinese New Zealand creatives, including students and alumni of Victoria University, the project aims to amplify the underrepresented voices of early Chinese immigrants and highlight their contributions to the history and development of Aotearoa’s capital city and their continued influence in shaping its identity.

Jamie Yee: director, theatre-maker
Kassandra Wang: composer, singer, theatre-maker
Lynette Shum: culture researcher, oral history creator
Cassandra Tse: playwright, director, performer and the artistic director of Red Scare Theatre Company
Event Highlights
• Insights from the Creative Team: Joined by writer Cadence Chung with Co-directors Jamie Yee and Kassandra Wang, the team share their journey of bringing Encounter to life.
• Historical and Cultural Perspectives: Oral history researcher and creator Lynette Shum provides context on the historical significance of Chinese narratives and their impact on Aotearoa’s cultural landscape.
• Representation in Creative Stage: Playwright, director, performer and artistic director Cassandra Tse of Red Scare Theatre Company joins the panel to discuss the representation of Chinese stories in Aotearoa’s creative stage, the insights and challenges raised from her practice.
