AMOS THE KID (Winnipeg)The release of Enough as it Was in 2023 followed the remarkable rise of Winnipeg’s Amos Nadlersmith from reclusive songwriter to hometown hero. Only a few years have passed since the not-quite-country musician was playing the odd diamond-in-the-rough set in a half-empty bar; now, he’s a stop-him-in-the-street performer playing for sold out crowds of hundreds and who released one of the “most anticipated" and "most underrated" Canadian albums of 2023”(Exclaim!).
The record saw Nadlersmith fully flesh out the corners of his sonic world; his indie-tinged-country rock is burnished for the first time by grungier undertones, somehow managing to be both incisive and feel-good—matching the energy of his live show. The music is never quite as straightforward as you'd expect, and their racaous sing-along-filled shows have become a shorthand for a great night out in Manitoba.
Enough as it Was was produced, engineered and mixed by Adam Fuhr (Yes We Mystic, Virgo Rising, Tinge), mastered by Cam Loeppky (The Weakerthans, Constantines).
MARISSA BURWELL (Regina)
It doesn’t take long to get to know Marissa Burwell. In her blindingly personal work, Burwell writes about childhood, love, vertigo, and snow. With her captivating warm vocals and sharp prose, she effortlessly weaves an enchanting indie sound that flows between folk and rock, traversing sensuous melodies to exhilaratingly raucous moments.
Hailing from the city of Regina, Saskatchewan, Marissa Burwell made her remarkable debut with a self-titled EP in 2019. The overwhelmingly positive response to her EP opened doors to international opportunities. In 2022 Marissa proudly unveiled her debut full-length album, “Bittersweet”, which showcased her warm, summery voice and wry wit beneath its indie-folk exterior. She has graced the stage at renowned events like Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival, the New Colossus Festival in NYC, and multiple Canadian festivals including Breakout West, NXNE, and Pop Montreal.
Burwell’s latest EP Either Way, released via DevilDuck Records in September 2023, features the clearest synthesis of Burwell’s spectrum of musical sensibilities yet with moments of warm musical tones featuring thick harmonies wrapped around guitars and gentle drum beats while other moments showcase cathartic bursts of alternative rock, erupting in dizzying crescendos of hammering pianos.
Gunner & Smith
When he sings, Geoff Smith unleashes a triumphantly clear voice that weds elements of his prairies upbringing. Despite the fiery effects - the intense, dusky melodies and wistful urgency - the singer/songwriter possesses something else entirely: tales that are strikingly familiar.
Combining the telltale gravel crunch of a grid road with the soaring expanse of skies, it’s this voice, both lush and literate, that carries forth his stories of connection and shared experiences marked with an uncanny fluency in Americana folk and roots rock.
And now Smith, who records music as Gunner & Smith, is back with a new collection of songs that are packed with both tension and redemption. His third full-length album, Hear You In My Head, due September 16, 2022, expands his take on a tried and true genre, and continues the deeply entrenched traditions of evocative lyricism that has established Smith as a voice well worth paying attention to. His lyrics trace an increasingly intricate existence: doubt, trust, faith, reflection. Hauntingly beautiful chords each come with their own suitcase full of tension, each capable of delivering their own reckoning.
