Join us at Anzac Square Galleries for a free talk exploring 'over-paid, over-sexed, and over-here' American troops in Queensland during WWII
About this Event

Nearly one million American Defence Personnel passed through Australia between 1941 and 1945, providing vital military assistance in the Pacific theatre of war. The presence of these troops, mainly stationed in Queensland, had vast social, economic, political, and cultural impacts on the Australian way of life. This talk will delve into:

  • The creation and expansion of infrastructure to house American Troops, like Camp Ascot and the US Army Round Mountain Detention and Rehabilitation Camp.
  • The major shifts in popular culture, such as the resurgence of Jazz, the introduction of the jitterbug and jive, and American sporting events.
  • The friendships formed between service personnel and communities as well as the rivalries that resulted in the Battle of Brisbane.
  • And the dramatic and sometimes scandalous love affair between many Queensland women and American GIs.

This talk series draws from State Library’s digital collection of military stories, diaries, letters, photographs and artefacts.

After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries - embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.

Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
