An impressive, intense entry from director Clint Eastwood, AMERICAN SNIPER examines the life of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), a former rodeo star from Texas who put his sharp-shooting skills to use during four (!) tours of duty in Iraq. He became a legendary figure for racking up 160 confirmed kills, although the film makes it quite clear he was not entirely comfortable with being idolized and had deep misgivings about some of his missions. SNIPER works as an action thriller, yet it's also effective as a psychological portrait of a man who is tormented by his own talent, and Cooper's superb performance really connects.
