Today, volunteers are more critical than ever as the Red Cross responds to a new major disaster about every two weeks. These massive events, like storms and wildfires, are on top of the home fires — which upend families multiple times every day across the country.
To make sure no one faces an emergency alone, the Red Cross has a critical need for disaster volunteers and is actively recruiting across the country to be ready for disasters of all sizes.
2025 has already witnessed a significant number of big disasters, following 2024, which recorded the second-highest number of billion-dollar disasters in a single year, marked by extreme events such as Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
While large disasters dominate the headlines, the majority of the nearly 65,000 disasters we respond to annually are home fires.
A single home fire may not garner much national attention, but it causes just as much heartache and need for those affected.
