We are out there in the community, holding fast to the morals and truths we learned while serving in the armed forces.
Members of the Norman Garrett American Legion Post No. 78 are reaching out to the public with an Open House and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce Saturday, March 25th from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. Refreshments and yard games will be provided. The goal is to let the community know about the American Legion, greet new business members, get more interest in the Legion and for more people to join.
We are working on rebranding our post to become a resting place for military families of all shapes and sizes. We want to invite the young service members with families as well as those seasoned veterans. We always need younger members … because we've got a few old timers who are still as active as they can be but for us to remain a resource to the community we need to continue to grow with new members.
The open house is at the American Legion Hall, 6025 Spikes Way, behind the county auditorium in Milton.
Beginnings
The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.
It is the nation’s largest veteran’s service organization, committed to mentoring youths and sponsorship of wholesome programs in local communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security and continued devotion to fellow service members and veterans.
The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism.
Members of Norman Garrett Post 78 meet the Third Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m.
Locally
So, what does Norman Garrett Post 78 do in the community? The answer is — a lot.
Members help to:
- Assist with local military families with assistance in navigating benefits they may be qualified for alongside Disabled American Veterans Service Officers
- Assist with community events, ceremonies
- Provide scholarships to local school seniors and JROTC cadets.
- Facilitate Flag Retirement Ceremonies
- Serve as caterers at Blue Wahoo’s games
- Have a medical loan locker for the community
- Facilitate Community events such as S’mores with Santa
- Host site for Flea Across Florida
- Charter Organization for Cub Scout Pack 451
Requirements
The requirements for joining the American Legion are set by Congress, and a person has to have served in the military. For more information, a person can ask a local legion member questions or call 850-377-2396
