George Lucas’ AMERICAN GRAFITTI
(PG, 1973, 110 min)
One of the most influential of all teen films, “American Graffiti” is a funny, nostalgic, and bittersweet look at a group of recent high school grads' last days of innocence. “American Graffiti” is a classic coming-of-age story set against the 1960s backdrop of hot rods, drive-ins and rock n’ roll. Starring Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips and Suzanne Somers in their breakout roles, this look back follows a group of teenagers as they cruise the streets on their last summer night before college. Nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, “American Graffiti” features the howling sounds of Wolfman Jack and an unforgettable soundtrack with songs by Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys and Bill Haley & His Comets.

Michael Schultz’s COOLEY HIGH: 50th Anniversary!
(PG, 1975, 107 min)
Like “American Graffiti”, “Cooley High” deals with girl, school, and police troubles as a group of high-school seniors prepare for post-high-school life on Chicago's near North Side in 1964. For aspiring poet Preach and his best friend, Cochise, they have a full slate of extracurricular activities: swinging dance parties, late-night joyrides, and the stumbling pursuit of romance. “Cooley High” is an endearingly funny, tender, and authentic portrait of Black teens striving toward a brighter future and set to a heavenly hit parade of Motown classics. ABC planned to make a TV series based on the film, but after the pilot was poorly received, the show was retooled as 1976’s “What’s Happening!” Starring Glynn Turman, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Garrett Morris, and Cynthia Davis.
