When / WhereVolunteers should meet at 8:45 a.m. at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park Visitor Center (2332 New Garden Rd, Greensboro, NC 27410).
Planned Activity
Volunteers will assist in constructing split rail fences. These structures were common in eighteenth-century America and played a role in the strategic formation of North Carolina Militia troops on the first line at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Today, the fences serve as an interpretive tool and reminder of the land's history.
At the start of the day, park staff will give a 15-minute interpretive program on the Battle of Guilford Courthouse and the site's history as a National Military Park.
Volunteers will then receive a five-minute orientation and training on the service project. At this time, volunteers who have not signed a Volunteer Service Agreement beforehand will sign Service Agreements.
The service project involves the construction of split rail fences. Physical requirements include team lifting weights of up to 25 lbs, walking on a paved incline for ¼ miles, and walking on uneven surfaces.
Should I bring any tools or supplies?
Volunteers should bring a water bottle. Water fountains are available in the Visitor Center and throughout the park.
Guilford Courthouse NMP has a limited supply of work gloves, which we will distribute on a first-come, first-served basis. Volunteers are encouraged to bring personal work gloves.
Volunteers should dress comfortably and are required to wear closed-toed shoes.
