About this Event
Gallery MAR presents “America Martin: Celebration,” on view January 2nd. Bold, joyful, and deeply human, Martin’s work redefines the figure through vibrant color, dynamic form, and the spirit of her Colombian-American heritage.
Martin’s art and personality encapsulates a sense of enthusiasm and hope. While born in the USA, the roots of America’s Colombian heritage deeply penetrate her work. People are Martin’s dominant subject. They are often at a grand scale, vivacious and accessible, and seem to burst out of the limits of each canvas or sculpture. Within this pulsating interplay of color, texture, line, and shapes, there is always America’s signature expression that identifies each work as an America Martin.
Martin is inspired by form and figure as depicted by the Impressionists and Modernists of the early 20th century. A concentration on line and flat color reduces her subjects to their simplest forms and yet challenges our tools of perception. Her accomplished confidence in mark making and gesture is clearly that of a dedicated and prolific artist. America describes herself as a painting anthropologist, working primarily with paint on canvas and paper to explore the human experience – and the human form. Taking inspiration from Mid-Century Modernist masters, America’s distinctive style is underscored by the use of boldly brushed lines and punctuated bursts of color to imply tone and mood.
