Since being nominated for the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards Middlesbrough’s Amelia Coburn has been busy. Her language studies have taken her around the world and fed into her increasingly sophisticated folk and jazz influenced song-writing. Highly narrative in her lyrics and equally rich in her expressive vocal delivery she is a captivating live performer who, through her formative forays into interpreting new wave, punk and vintage pop/rock classics from The Specials, Bowie, Kate Bush, The Wedding Present and more, has gained her a diverse and loyal fanbase across the UK and beyond. Appearances at, amongst many other events, Cambridge Folk Festival, Costa Del Folk, Czech Ukulele Festival and on stage with legends such as Steve Harley and the late Vin Garbutt she’s no stranger to large, daunting audiences but still prefers the intimacy of small venues where her voice can cause entire rooms to hold their breath.
Currently working on a clutch of new, original material she released the instant classic Dublin Serenade in late 2020 and picked up a host of new fans discovering her through radio and social media. With planned releases throughout 2021 that will defy-expectations in their diversity she is truly coming into her own and making good on that early promise. At times haunting, beguiling, whimsical and playful she shares a knack for melody and charm with Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy and a McCartney-like ability to pluck songs out of the cosmos that sound as though they have always existed.
