Session Objectives:

• Discuss the clinical and patient safety implications of the recent FDA Safety Alert regarding reusable flexible endoscopes used in the gastroenterology, urology, pulmonology, and ENT specialties

• Review the current evidence-based clinical recommendations for infection control related to the use of medical devices to prevent cross-contamination and infection risk

• Discuss how to operationalize the FDA, CDC, AHVAP, and AORN recommendations to mitigate risks to the patient and improve the value of care delivery and product selection

Session Overview:

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration released a series of Safety Alerts to notify healthcare providers and facilities of recent adverse events associated with reprocessing failures and device design challenges of reusable flexible endoscopes and other medical devices. These Safety Alerts provided multiple strategies to improve patient safety, reduce cross-contamination, and move towards elimination of the riskiest components of the use of the bronchoscope. During this symposium program, our expert faculty will review evidence-based strategies to improve infection control practices and eliminate reprocessing errors commonly observed in clinical practice, improve clinical outcomes, and facilitate efficient value analysis processes.
