Thrilling trumpeter and spearhead of new jazz, who collaborated with Esperanza Spalding and Kendrick Lamar, celebrated for his imaginative compositions.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New American trumpet hero Ambrose Akinmusire is fascinated by wonderful melodies on the one hand, taking example from Joni Mitchell and Björk, and heavy beats on the other; he played on the hip-hop classic To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, like his contemporaries Kamasi Washington and Thundercat. His own albums keep appearing in international best-jazz-album-of-the-year charts, most recently Origami Harvest, a baffling collage of jazz, classical strings, spoken word and rap. Before that, he reached great heights with the monumental Blue Note double album A Rift in Decorum, a live recording with his quartet at the legendary New York club Village Vanguard. Now he’s back at the BIMHUIS with his renewed quartet featuring Fabian Almazan on piano, who previously appeared here in Terence Blanchard’s group.
‘Ambrose Akinmusire may be the most distinctive, elusive and ultimately satisfying trumpeter of his generation’ (New York Times).
‘One of the prime and powerful fresh voices in 21st century jazz … Where his genius most keenly is felt is in the writing, which not only presents a wealth of ideas, but deploys them with power, ingenuity and grace’ (Downbeat).
Please note: this concert is rescheduled from 22 May 2020. Previously bought tickets stay valid.
