Positive Space Welcomes Echo Theatre Company Production "Amazons, Gypsies and Wandering Minstrels," by Deborah J. Hunter
Award-winning poet and playwright Deborah J. Hunter’s acclaimed work in poetic monologues, "Amazons, Gypsies and Wandering Minstrels," is spoken in the voices of a narrator, an observer, and women trying to survive mental illness, homelessness, addiction, and abuse. Deborah is known for her rhythmic, soul-filled spoken word performances and recognized for her career as a teaching artist and work in behavioral health. She is also a staunch and longtime advocate and educator on social justice issues which are often the themes of her poetry.
A descendant of 1921 Greenwood Massacre survivors, Deborah was honored to receive a 2020 Greenwood Art Project (Bloomberg) grant for her original play, "Porches," set during the years following that Tulsa tragedy and staged during the 2021 Centennial remembrance. She was presented with a Woman of the Year Pinnacle Award in 2018 and was a 2013 Oklahoma Poet Laureate finalist. Deborah’s poetry has been published in literary journals, magazines, anthologies, and other printed media. Her chapter, “Violence and the Homeless Population: Perpetrators or Victims?” appears in the academic series, "Violence and Abuse in Society: Understanding a Global Crisis."
"Amazons, Gypsies and Wandering Minstrels," by Deborah J. Hunter, will have performances at 8pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 27, 28, 29, at Positive Space Tulsa, 1324 East 3rd Street.
