Many people may not realize that their ancestors hailed from a former Prussian province called Pomerania (Pommern in German), an area along the south shore of the Baltic Sea. The western part of Pomerania remains in Germany, but the eastern part is now in northern Poland. The largest numbers of Pomeranian immigrants settled in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas.Paul Sternberg will present “Amazing Finds in Pomerania” for the St. Cloud Area Genealogists (SCAG) on Tuesday, March 18 at 7 p.m. at the Stearns History Museum, 235 33rd Ave. S., St. Cloud. He will give some tips and tricks for finding your ancestors’ villages, what to look for if you visit, and share some of his discoveries (many unintentionally!) over the years. Paul will be onsite for this presentation but if you are unable to attend in person, his presentation will be broadcast live to everyone watching remotely on Zoom.
Paul is the vice-president of the Pommern Regional Group of Minnesota, an affiliate of the Germanic Genealogy Society. He has traveled to Pommern numerous times to research genealogy and take photos for various books with particular emphasis in Schlochau, Rummelsburg, Naugard, Regenwalde and Saatzig. Paul is the co-author of Pommern Revisited (2009).
The program is free to SCAG members; $7 for non-members. Non-members can pay at the door. The individual annual membership rate for SCAG is $25.
