Celebrating Italian trance music The first band of traditional southern Italian music in UK!AMARATERRA
It’s fast, it’s frantic, it’s frenetic. Amaraterra play the red-hot pizzica music of the Salento region of Italy, a dazzling song-and-dance combination shot through with high-pulse passion.
Formed in London, UK in 2011 by a group of passionate expats from the Salento, Amaraterra has grown into a multi-national ensemble, presenting its audience with a joyful and energetic selection of pizzica and roots music from all over the south of Italy, and adapting its style of music to the vibrant and cosmopolitan world music scene without weakening the links to its traditional musical canon.
A ‘Pizzica’ is the malicious bite of the tarantula spider. In order to heal from the poison you must dance till you drop, following the intense, restless beat of the tambourine. It is one of the oldest musical expressions of the Mediterranean, brought to London by a group of passionate musicians and dancers. Expect a flourish of instruments, colour and movement.
DJ ROBERTA CUTOLO
A long time heavy music head originally from Bari, Puglia living in London for 30 years+. Adopting herself to the Dingwalls, later Bar Rumba ‘That’s How It Is’ and Straight No Chaser magazine family she soon became a well connected link between Italy and the 90’s underground London scene and all its trends. As a Straight No Chaser scribbler, correspondent for Acid Jazz magazine and RadioItaliaNetwork, Roberta went on living her dream in London for being the place where music has always been happening and the club scene has always been strong in terms of legacies. This to mention the later merging of another extremely important music fam into Roberta’s life as a digger as this one came via professor-friend-dancer-writer Tim Lawrence .
