“Een achtbaan van emoties, in een triomf van muzikale verbeeldingskracht.” Vijf sterren zette de NRC boven de recensie van de opera Amandante van Maxim Shalygin, “een van de interessantste componisten van zijn generatie”. De krant selecteerde Amandante bovendien voor de muziek-top-10 van 2024. Korzo en Classical NOW! brengen de bejubelde opera nu naar Den Haag.
Symposium is een van Plato’s bekendste dialogen. De toneelschrijver Agathon geeft een feestmaal in zijn huis. Hij heeft prominente gasten, zoals de filosoof Socrates en de komedieschrijver Aristophanes. Ze houden redevoeringen over Eros in meerere facetten, van fysieke tot Platoonse liefde. Socrates vertelt hoe Diotima, een wijze vrouw, hem leerde hoe je door de liefde het Schone zelf kan leren. Aan het eind van het feestmaal stormt de dronken generaal Alcibiades binnen. Hij houdt een persoonlijke lofrede op Socrates en beschrijft openhartig dat hij Socrates wilde verleiden, wat mislukte door Socrates’ bewonderenswaardige zelfbeheersing.
Paul van der Woerd schreef het libretto dat hij ook baseerde op Percy Bysshe Shelley’s romantische vertaling van Plato’s dialoog, waarin de emoties hoger oplaaien dan in het origineel. Het inspireerde Shalygin tot fascinerend kleurrijke muziek, vol humor, passie en virtuositeit. Het libretto is volledig gezongen, wat zorgt voor een rijke melodische en harmonische ontwikkeling. Zoals Shalygin zelf zegt: “Ik wil dat mensen afdalen in de gewelven van de melodielijnen, worden meegenomen op die golf.”
Amandante is een primeur: de eerste opera van de Nederlands-Oekraïense componist Maxim Shalygin. De opera zou oorspronkelijk in 2022 in Kyiv in première gaan, maar werd afgeblazen vanwege de oorlog in Oekraïne. Na twee turbulente jaren voor het ensemble Nova Opera beleefde Amandante zijn première in het Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. In een nieuwe mise-en-espace met een lichtontwerp van Nico de Rooij is de bejubelde opera nu in Den Haag voor de tweede keer te bewonderen.

Maxim Shalygin (1985) is een van de meest opvallende componisten van zijn generatie. Geboren in Oekraïne en sinds 2010 gevestigd in Nederland, ontwikkelde hij een uiterst persoonlijke muzikale taal. Zijn muziek balanceert tussen spiritualiteit en emotionele kracht, tussen verstilling en explosie, en groeit organisch. Zijn stijl is avontuurlijk en diepgeworteld in traditie, met een spirituele gelaagdheid die herinnert aan zijn Oost-Europese wortels.
Shalygin componeert in uiteenlopende genres, van kamermuziek en vocale werken tot elektroakoestische composities, muziek voor film, theater en zijn eerste opera: Amandante. Zijn composities zijn uitgevoerd op podia zoals Carnegie Hall, Klarafestival, De Doelen en het Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ.

‘A rollercoaster of emotions and a triumph of musical imagination.’ The NRC gave Amandante, Maxim Shalygin's opera, a five-star review, calling him ‘one of the most interesting composers of his generation’. The newspaper also selected Amandante for its top ten music list for 2024. Korzo and Classical NOW! are now bringing this critically acclaimed opera to The Hague.
Symposium is one of Plato's best-known dialogues. The playwright Agathon hosts a banquet at his home. His guests include the philosopher Socrates and the comedy writer Aristophanes. They give speeches about Eros in all its forms, from the physical to the Platonic. Socrates recounts how Diotima, a wise woman, taught him that love can lead to knowledge of beauty itself. At the end of the banquet, the drunken general Alcibiades storms in. He delivers a personal eulogy to Socrates, candidly describing how he tried and failed to seduce him due to his admirable self-control.
Inspired by Percy Bysshe Shelley's romantic translation of Plato's dialogue, Paul van der Woerd wrote the libretto, in which the emotions run higher than in the original. This inspired Shalygin to compose fascinatingly colourful music full of humour, passion, and virtuosity. The libretto is sung in its entirety, ensuring a rich melodic and harmonic development. As Shalygin himself says, 'I want people to descend into the vaults of the melody lines, to be carried away on that wave.'
Amandante is a first: the first opera by the Dutch-Ukrainian composer, Maxim Shalygin. Originally scheduled to premiere in Kyiv in 2022, the opera was cancelled due to the war in Ukraine. Following two turbulent years for the NOVA OPERA ensemble, Amandante finally premiered at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. In a new mise-en-espace with lighting design by Nico de Rooij, the acclaimed opera can now be enjoyed for the second time in The Hague.

Born in Ukraine in 1985, Maxim Shalygin is one of the most striking composers of his generation. Born in Ukraine, he has been based in the Netherlands since 2010 and has developed an extremely personal musical language. His music strikes a balance between spirituality and emotional power, stillness and explosion, and grows organically. His adventurous style is deeply rooted in tradition, with a spiritual layering that is reminiscent of his Eastern European roots.
Shalygin composes in a variety of genres, including chamber music, vocal works, electroacoustic compositions and music for film and theatre, as well as his first opera: Amandante. His compositions have been performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Klarafestival, De Doelen and Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.
