About this Event
Facilitator: Dr Kwesi Owusu
Following on from our Black History Season Launch Event - a special screening of Ama: An African Voyage of Discovery, this workshop is a space to creatively unpack the themes and issues raised in the film. .
Originally released in 1991, Kwesi Owusu and Nii Kwate Owoo's acclaimed feature film explores the tensions between home and here navigated by a Ghanaian family in 90s London. Drawing on West African ancestral practices, spiritual prophecy and reincarnation, Ama combines fantasy with realism.
This workshop will creatively explore the ancestral visitation, and healing modalities portrayed in the film as well as the power of the arts to enable access to African traditional practices denigrated during the colonial period.
