FREE OUTSIDE EVENTOn April 30th, ALTERNBURN tributes to honor the Czech tradition of building bonfires, based on the pagan Slavic tradition to bid farewell to winter, burning fires but then misappropriated by those afraid of witchcraft in the Medieval times. But we - the opposite - want to invite all witches & wizards of Prague to join the celebration of ALTENBURN.
Ancient Slavs constructed large pyres and stuff straw-filled "witch figures" , then roast sausages, sing, and await nightfall. When darkness falls, the effigies are thrown into the flames, symbolizing the end of winter's chill. Villages compete to build the biggest fire, while kids parade torches and hurl them at the witch effigies. It's a festive event where both children and adults enjoy the celebrations, marking the defeat of evil spirits and the arrival of warmer weather.
