About this Event
Alonso Umaña, born in Costa Rica and raised in Mexico, began playing drums at the age of 10. With support from the Tuition Assistance Scholarship provided by the Latin Grammy Foundation, he completed his Bachelor’s degree at the City College of New York in 2020. He has studied with notable musicians such as Greg Hutchinson, Carl Allen, Ali Jackson, Antonio Sánchez, Adam Cruz, and Obed Calvaire.
Alonso has shared the stage with renowned artists including Brian Lynch, Xavier Davis, Rodney Whitaker, Walter Blanding, Randy Napoleon, and Steve Wilson. Saxophonist Walter Blanding has said of him, “He has a sensibility and sensitivity to playing and communicating on stage that is rare…”
He was mentored by the acclaimed jazz drummer Ali Jackson, who also produced Alonso’s debut album, Rule of Nature, released in 2022. That same year, Alonso moved back to Mexico City, where he performed with many leading figures in the jazz scene, such as Roberto Verástegui, Agustín Bernal, Pancho Lelo de Larrea, Luri Molina, Saúl Ojeda, Israel Cupich, Jahaziel Arrocha, Paquito Cruz, Alex Mercado, and Carolina Mercado.
In 2023, he won the Bosphorus Outstanding Drummer Award at the Concurso de Jazz de México and subsequently became a Bosphorus Artist. In 2024, he began his master’s degree at Michigan State University.
He has two releases as a leader: Rule of Nature (2022) and Fo’Nection (2024).
