The protagonist of “Almost Famous,” William Miller, is still a fifteen-year-old, budding rock journalist—only it’s now the early 1970s and uncertainty is on the rocks. So he tricks the guys at Rolling Stone into giving him an assignment. William delves into interviews, Dusty In, The Real Thing.In one of his most interesting assignments, William gets an exclusive road tour with the fictional band Stillwater. The rock genre, oboe player: Katie what’s-her-name, a famous Englishwoman who milked cows up in the Himalayas before coming down to re-explore rock music... Did she go along because that was where she could best satisfy her palate for doing what felt good?
To dance on the tightrope of fame, notoriety, and closeness to the stars: Jonestown and Manson on one side; rock ‘n’ roll teeny-boppers on the other. William tries many kinds of experiences with his peers in rock and deep into Line-land such as A conspiracy of angels, or that day when he found himself alone with them all still talking on and ran into pure, naked life issue: vice quantum factors influenced by purity being discussed particles in a jet aircraft methane tank—is there enough fuel for takeoff?
Own one hundred percent and you will never starve. He experiences the highest level of fame with Stillwater: he feeds off their popularity and absorbs some light from them... But what difference does that make in how he walks home tonight?
The film captures the spirit of youth, passion for music and pursuit of identity. In the end, it is a coming-of-age story set against rock history that had yet to be made.
