Hong Kong-based indie rock band ‘Mr Koo’ reinterpret surf rock through their own lens, blending blue notes and dreamy chords with a psychedelic kick. What started as a one-man recording project has now evolved into a powerhouse live band. The group draw influence from funk, shoe-gaze and blues, creating a nostalgic sound of summer.
The music, originally inspired by hot sandy beaches and the concrete jungle we call home, explores all aspects of life in the modern world, touching on themes of woozy love and deep layers of nostalgia. The first Mr Koo single ‘Big Wave Bay,’ released in 2018 became an instant classic. Over the years, constant gigging and multiple online releases, the latest being the album ‘Head in the Clouds,’ led the band to perform at Clockenflap Festival 2023. Now a mainstay in the Hong Kong indie scene, known for their psychedelic, improvised guitar and saxophone solos, combined with raw, soulful vocals continue to captivate audiences.
